Fishing, oyster farming, shipyards, commercial and marina ports: the sea has always been at the heart of Morbihan. And at its very centre lies this ‘little sea’ — Mor Bihan in Breton — which gave the region its name.
With its 12,000 hectares and numerous islands and islets, the Gulf of Morbihan is a truly exceptional setting. A living natural heritage, shaped by the sea, which for a quarter of a century has provided the perfect backdrop for an event that has become iconic: the Gulf of Morbihan Week.
As the leading partner of the Gulf of Morbihan Week since its inception, the Morbihan Department is proud to support this collective endeavour, alongside local councils, associations, volunteers and all those who bring this great maritime festival to life.
Organising the Gulf Week remains, with every edition, a challenge superbly met by an exceptional team of enthusiasts who love the sea, historic sailing ships and our Gulf. These passionate individuals are committed to passing on and sharing their passion with as many people as possible.
They mobilise thousands of volunteers in the neighbouring towns, attract enthusiasts from sometimes distant lands and bring together thousands of spectators. They transform the Gulf into a vast venue for encounters, discoveries and celebration.
David Lappartient, President of the Morbihan Departmental Council
“Gulf Week remains true to its roots: a major maritime festival, popular and free of charge, which takes over the towns around the Gulf and brings together, both on the water and on land, traditional and distinctive boats.
It reflects the spirit of Morbihan: authentic in its history, unifying in its ability to bring people together, and open to the world through the encounters it fosters.
Year after year, the spectacle is renewed with hundreds of sailing vessels, ports in festive mood, bustling villages, crews travelling from afar, and volunteers working with passion: Gulf Week is a constant source of wonder.
And against this exceptional backdrop, Morbihan reaffirms what it is at its very core: a region that knows how to bring its heritage to life, share its passions and take pride in opening them up to the world.”
